From 10:30am, 30 mins of storybooks along with sensory objects provided to play with to enhance the stories and imagination.

Storytime Sessions are suitable for ages 5 and under.

All children must be supervised by an appropriate adult throughout the session.

Come along to the Visitor Centre for a hands-on educational experience.

The session offers the opportunity to meet and handle a huge variety of wiggly creatures! Led by Cairis Hickey of The Wiggly Wild Show. There will also be a display of specimens to look at and handle!

Children must be accompanied by 1 adult at all times. Maximum of 1 adult per family group. Recommended for children aged 4 and above. Head to the visitor centre on arrival to be booked in.

Follow a trail of spooky challenges and questions that will lead you to our Creepy Campfire Corner. There, you will get to assemble your own terrifyingly tasty Creepy Crêpe, with a choice of delicious fillings like chocolate, marshmallows and more! Then watch your crêpe being cooked on our cosy campfire. A Spooktacular way to enjoy the Halloween season.

This is an outdoor event, please dress appropriately, our outdoor trail has a few uneven surfaces so it may not be suitable for wheelchair users, we are unable to accommodate dogs on this event. All participating children will require a ticket, adults go free but will not receive a crêpe, maximum of 2 adults per paying child, Recommended age 3+ We anticipate this event will last approximately 1 hour. Join us at the St George’s Arts Centre for a special family interactive workshop/experience from Whirligig Workshops as part of our Autumn Exhibition ‘Frights and Delights’.

The audience enters a dark room with just one small light across the space (a Victorian-looking laboratory). They sit, but the presenter is nowhere to be seen. A train sounds, then out jumps a steam punk time travelling scientist! Just having gotten off their time-travelling train, they talk to the audience about where they have been.

With the use of a cool prism, a shadow puppet theatre and an array of unique plasma balls, participants learn all about the history and science behind, light, reflection and shadows, as our steam punk time travelling scientist tells them all about their voyages meeting famous scientists in history.

They even throw in a few dinosaur facts and shadows because, well to be honest, they just love a dinosaur, I mean who doesn’t!?

The performance concludes with glow-in-the-dark slime!

Performances at 11am &1.30pm - The experience lasts 1 hour with an additional 15 minutes at the end to take photographs.

Suggested age 5+ for workshop participation.

Workshop facilitated by Clare from Meet + Makes.

This family friendly workshop will see us exploring the world of yarn monsters.  You will learn how to make tassels and pom poms from yarn before turning them into Halloween monsters using pipe cleaners, googly eyes and craft foam.  You can copy the examples provided or use the materials freely to create your own inventions.  Maybe they become ghosts and spiders or maybe a three eyed monster from your imagination.  At the end, you can string your monsters together to create a Halloween garland decoration. 

This workshop will take place in the main gallery space alongside our Autumn/Halloween Exhibition ‘Frights and Delights’.

Suitable from ages 4+, adult participation will be encouraged! Please note, children aged 12 and under must be accompanied by an appropriate adult at all times throughout the workshop. Adults do not need to book a place if only assisting the child.

This fun workshop with artist Jo Lucy will offer children the opportunity to make Autumn pine cone creatures, extra materials will be available to add decorations. There will be a selection of equipment for different uses. Glue guns will be used during this activity, so adults will need to assist for safety reasons. 2-3 items will be made per child (depending on time available).

This workshop will take place in the main gallery space alongside our Autumn/Halloween Exhibition ‘Frights and Delights’.

Join artist Andy Hopton and learn how to make small wire trinkets. In years gone by, sailors would have made similar objects using wire and other material to while away the hours onboard ship. Andy will guide you through the process of manipulating wire to make the maritime shapes, with alternative materials available for younger children.

All aboard for the Gravesend Maritime Festival!
Splice the mainbrace, heave to, and prepare to shiver your timbers as Gravesend prepares to celebrate its historic links to the River Thames.

Gravesend Maritime Festival takes place on Saturday 27th & Sunday 28th September at St Andrew’s Gardens overlooking the Thames, and on Gravesend Town Pier, the world’s oldest cast iron pier.

The historic pier will be hosting a number of visits from historic ships over the weekend, including the ever-popular Waverley, the world’s last seagoing paddle steamer. Book your sailings online with Waverley Excursions

There will also be a number of Thames Barges on display, with sailings and tours available. Book online -Tiller and Wheel

The weekend will feature  free entertainment, including live music, a mermaid, and performances from the hearty band of Sheppey Pirates.

Pop-up on the pier will host creative workshops, magic shows, and see the return of the popular Provisions Café in the former Riva Bar. Activities will be running between 11am and 4pm on both days.

But one stormy night, a magical tide changes everything. Transformed into a giant, talking crustation, Caspian finds himself elected as the town's mayor. But danger lurks when a group of bad apples plot to cook Caspian for their dinner.

Packed with puppetry, music, and plenty of laughs, Caspian's Storm is a fast-paced, interactive show for the young and young at heart. With LAStheatre’s trademark quirky humour, toe-tapping music, and an important message about protecting our environment, it’s the perfect show for all the family. Performing as Merryman the Jester, Mickey will be entertaining visitors with his close hand magic, silly jokes and excellent balloon modelling skills around the Pier. Mickey will be performing from 11am.

As part of our ‘Great British Summer Holiday’ themed pop-up on the Pier event, we have some wonderful seaside themed entertainment.

Keep an eye out for the hilarious and cheeky ‘Partners in Mime’ who will be popping up on the Pier from 1pm on Saturday 16th August. If you visited the family fun zone in the Fort Gardens at the Riverside Festival this year, you may have caught some of their hilarious antics! Well now they’re back again!

The two characters attempt to complete their masterpieces whilst antagonising each other in the process. The show explores themes of collaboration, play, dedication, spontaneity and letting go. The show features no language and is accessible for deaf audiences.

Big Goldilocks and the 3 Bears Plus...... By Booster Cushion Theatre

Everything is in disguise and the story goes into the skies with this comical retelling of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. This comical story is retold through a massive 6ft tall book complete with pop ups and props coming out of the book!

Big Goldilocks wanders off from her parents into the forest but soon gets lost, getting hungry, grumpy and tired. The forest animals decide to escape before she gets even more grumpy on an Animal Rescue Centre which flies high throughout the skies! Goldilocks arrives at the Three Bears house for a big bowl of cereal but soon it’s up to the audience to help scare her away…
