The Colour Blue in Western Art Throughout The Years
The Masonic Hall, 25 Wrotham Road, Gravesend DA11 0PA
Welcome to The Arts Society Gravesend
Nowadays in the West, the colour blue is immensely popular. From the colour of jeans to the UN and EU flags, blue is a positive and consensual colour. However, it has not always been the case. In Ancient Rome blue was not a highly valued colour. And in early Christianity, Mary was not wearing a blue mantle. It is during the 12th century that in Europe blue progressively became a colour symbolically associated with the spiritual and divine. This lecture retraces the story of blue in Western arts, from Antiquity to the present. We will reflect upon the changing meaning(s) given to this colour. e will also evoke the different materials used to create a whole range of blue pigments: from ultramarine and cobalt to Prussian blue and Yves Klein Blue.

Postcards From Far and Near
The Masonic Hall, 25 Wrotham Road, Gravesend DA11 0PA
Welcome to The Arts Society Gravesend
For over a century, postcards have pictured our shared history across the globe. They have documented the changing role of women, the growth of cities, evolving styles of architecture, home decoration, royalty, celebrity, the rise of cinema, aviation, the automobile, fashion trends, celebrations and holidays. Few people, places or things have not become the subject of a postcard. But the age of the postcard is over. With our mobile phones, we take and send images in an instant. This lecture celebrates the history and scope of picture postcards — bearers of news and repositories of memory.

ELLE TENNYSON - Tales In Ink
St George’s Arts Centre, St George’s Shopping Centre, Gravesend
Tales in Ink is a collection of work by local artist and illustrator Elle Tennyson, made up of studies that delve into the surreal intricacies of world mythology and with the intention of combining elements to create her own narrative.
Her use of ink and bleach as a primary medium, gives an unpredictability in its creation especially when combined with salts, as unexpected colours, tones and textures leach out. As a result, it is very much a medium that you have to work together with, rather than attempting to control.
Her koi fish have become a recurring motif in her work, a constant companion as she’s navigated through new practices and developed new ideas. The fish, much like the zodiac sign of Pisces represents the constant struggle of an artist, with the two fish representing the eternal balancing act of the conscious and the unconscious in the quest for inspiration.
Her influences are eclectic, drawing from Japanese mythological imagery, European Gothic Medieval Art, the art of the Tarot, mythicism and alchemy.
Elle has a BA in Art and Design from Ravensbourne University and has worked as a graphic artist in film and TV and is currently a Resident Artist at Art is For All.
Also featured in the exhibition is work by Household Essentials, a collective of three female artists, of which Elle is a member, who all specialise in varying mediums of ink, watercolour and paint. Their first professional collaboration was creating the artwork for the play ‘The Great Ruckus’ that debuted in the Edinburgh Fringe last summer, and have since been showing their work at various fairs including The London Illustration Fair. Izzy Tennyson’s raucous collection of menacing anthropomorphic animals and insect portraits drip with acerbic wit while children’s book illustrator, Grace Chilton’s fantastical characters tell rib-tickling stories.

Pop Art Workshop - Icons Collage
St George’s Arts Centre, St George’s Shopping Centre, Gravesend
Pop Artists of the 50s & 60s blurred the lines between ‘low’ and ‘high’ art by bridging the gap between popular culture and classical art. By incorporating consumer symbols such as brand logos and iconic celebrities they reinforced the idea that art could be inspired by anything and everything. This workshop will steer you through the process of creating a unique celebrity portrait by collaging aspects of consumer society, fame, fashion and kitsch.
Workshop will last between 1.5-2 hours and must be booked in advance.
